Impromptu

Strategies for Impromptu Speaking

First you need to generate ideas…

Brainstorming – once you are given a topic you can ask yourself what do I know, what experiences have I had, and/or what have I observed others in experiencing this topic?

Reverse Brainstorming – what do you not know about the topic, what experiences have you not had, or what have you never observed before concerning others.

Parallel Thinking – what does the topic remind you of, then what, then what… until you find something you can speak about.

Next, if necessary, bridge to an alternate idea or topic…

Summary > Praise > Redirect > Bridge

Finally, pick a suitable format…

3 points (how or why)

what, why, when, where, how, and who

who, doing what, by when, and how

who, did what, when, and how

PREP (Point, Reason, Example, Point)

Past, Present, Future

Cause, Effect, Remedy

Before, The Event, The Result

Board, Take-off, Cruise, Land, Disembark
